Surfing is a surface water sport in which a person (the surfer) rides a board (the surfboard) on the crest of a wave as it carries the surfer towards the shore. Two major subdivisions within stand-up surfing are long-boarding and short-boarding, reflecting differences in surfboard design including surfboard length, and riding style.

In tow-in surfing (most often, but not exclusively, associated with big wave surfing), a motorized water vehicle, such as apersonal watercraft tows the surfer into the wave front, helping the surfer match a large wave’s higher speed, a speed that is generally, but not exclusively a speed that a self-propelled surfer can not match.

Dubai: The 1st heat of the traditional Rowing Race held at Mina Seyahi on Saturday November 24th, made for a pleasant contrast between the old and the new with the Palm Jumeirah construction in the backdrop. The race was a display of sheer strength, skill and excellent communication between skipper and rowers. Moreover it was a perfect show of endurance. The modernity of the area with skyscrapers dotting the island and seafront made for an excellent backdrop of the lifestyle of a city that is bustling all the year round yet firmly rooted in its traditions.

In what marks the start of the traditional rowing race of the season there was stiff competition, and this was evident in the facial expressions of the rowers, the enthusiasm of the teams and the encouragement given by the nakhoudah (skipper) who did not cease to spur his team on to the finish line.

The races were traditionally held at the creek to remind the youth of today of the past heritage of their forefathers, but due to developmental projects it was shifted to Mina Seyahi.

The racers were divided into two batches. In the first race of 22 rowing boats, competition was rife between Al Matla’a, Wadi Wesam 1 and Al Zaabi with Matla’a making it to the finish line at top speed leading by a boats length. Skippered by Saif Khalaf Al Marri, Matla’a rowed furiously right from the flag off and it was a delight to see them cruise on. Wadi Wesam 1 and Al Zaabi were the next to cross the finish line respectively.

In the second batch of the race Dubai had RAK Motors and Najm Suhail 1 close on their heels leaving them little option but to row faster to make it with an inch distance from their rivals. Ahmed Rahman Al Mansouri steered his crew in Dubai to finish first followed by RAK Motors and Najm Suhail 1 in second and third place respectively.

Jubilation was rampant on the break water at Mina Seyahi as supporters of the teams cheered them on and when the wave of the chequered flag signalled the winners, the crowd burst into spontaneous chanting of traditional song and dance, much of a spectacle of revelry. Throughout the two rounds skippers encouraged their teams with chants of patriotic verses and stomping of the feet as the rowers rowed their boat in unison rhythmically.

The men’s four, for so long the flagship boat of British rowing, calmed at least some of the anxieties caused by a troubled season when they qualified comfortably for the semi-finals by winning their heat in a workmanlike fashion on Saturday.

On the misty waters of the rowing lake at Shunyi, and with a significant breeze to row into, the British boat started at a fairly conservative stroke rate. Even so, it was enough to take them into a half-length lead over an experienced Italian boat by the halfway mark.

With the objective only being to win the race, the quartet did not attempt to impose themselves. Only in the last quarter was there a slight increase to their tempo to establish a winning distance of just under a length. Their performance, which earned nodding approval from Sir Steve Redgrave who was watching, will ensure that the British boat will be offered one of the better berths for Wednesday’s semi-final.

Tom James only joined the boat in April this year, and with his and stroke Andy Triggs Hodge’s appearances restricted by injuries, in both cases to their backs, this was only the third occasion that the quartet made up by Steve Williams and Pete Reed had raced together. Their victory also continues an extraordinary run for the men’s four in Olympic rowing, the British boats not having lost a race since the final in Atlanta 12 years ago.

Two other British boats qualified for the semi-finals as winners: Matt Wells and Stephen Rowbotham in the double sculls and Alan Campbell in the single sculls. There was no happier winner than Campbell who, two months ago, suffered a knee infection which needed an operation, keeping the Coleraine rower off the water for three weeks.

It does not matter if you are just a novice or a professional, as long as you play the sport, you should always resort to the best products in the market. Selecting the proper kite will enable you to get the best out of kitesurfing. One, it will give you power to skim over the water’s surface and two, it will allow you to enjoy the extreme sport even more because you are able to maneuver easily using the special board.

It is a publicly known fact that this sport has taken the world by storm. In the recent years, the number of surfers increased equipment kitesurftremendously in every certain parts of the globe. The best thing about it is it takes no more than a few days to learn the basics. Once the related risks are understood, the surfer is able to play with the open water with only minimum equipment required. The primary thing to consider at all times is the choice of kites because it determines the output. Success or failure is always a possibility, however with the best kites; one is closer to the former.

One common misconception is people think that simple foil kites will do the job. Many are oblivious that professional kitesurfers prefer inflatable kites. Yes it is true that foil kites are good for beginners because of the fact that it is easy to assemble. Nevertheless, as one progress in later stages, one will realize the need of inflatable kites. The assembly is quite complicated though because it requires an installation of an air bladder.

You would also need to buy a harness because your hands will definitely numb from the pull of the handle. The harness neutralizes the pull to the kite and your body. Pressure heaves will sometimes cause the kites to crash but equipments such as foil kites allow the air to break out in such event.

Advanced information about sailboats and sailing in US waters. This course is not designed to substitute for a US SAILING certification course or on-the-water training by a sailing instructor, but may be used as one of the tools in preparation for taking a certified course or in continuing your sailing education.

A small boat is a sailboat less than 20 feet and has either a mainsail or a combination of a mainsail and a front sail called a jib. These boats are relatively inexpensive and are a favorite of youth sailing programs, college racing teams and the Olympics.

Sailing a small boat is both fun and challenging. One must balance and shift the crew’s weight with every turn, sometimes having to hike out over the water to prevent the boat from capsizing. In high winds many small boats can achieve high speeds by planing or rising on top of the water. It has been said that the skill of the sailor is inversely related to the size of the sailboat.

KiteSurfing is by far the latest craze in extreme sports. The idea of using a kite to enhance speed and gravity for the surfer seems like a new and exhilarating challenge, yet the art of KiteSurfing dates back to the 13th Century Chinese when it was used as a simple mode of transportation. KiteSailing, as it was known, was a medium that used the wind as an aid to harness its momentum and energy to mobilize their canoes across water. The earliest recorded history of KiteSailing dates back to the early 12th Century.

In the 1800′s George Pocock took the basic kite design to a whole new level by increasing the size of the overall kite and used them as a sail to glide carts on land and ships on the water. The designs of the kites were engineered with 4 lines, the same setup being deployed today. Both carts and boats were able to turn and sail upwind. The wind would generate enough lift underneath the kite to raise it off of the ground and powerful enough to sustain it for a period of time. These kites have been able to propel a man-made vehicle across the ground, snow, ice and water. These kites are codependent on the wind and its necessary to get off of the ground or water to get them to fly. However, once the kite is in the air it manufactures its own wind, which is proportionately faster and creates a higher rate of speed for the vehicle.

Yet one issue still remains most of the earlier kites were deployed from the land and off of the flat ground. Not on the water where KiteSurfing takes place. In the 1980′s Wipika, Kiteski, fOne, Concept Air, C-Quad, and Naish Kites marketed water launch kites. These kites could be sailed again after falling short of wind into the water. In the late 1990′s off of the Hawaiian coast of Maui, Laird Hamilton and Manu displayed the extreme sport opportunities to radical surfers and wake boarders. Its popularity has since skyrocketed as one of the fastest growing water sports in the past two years.
